Elektrobit supplied the mission with radar altimeters, which task was to transmit a very high frequency radio signal, which reflects back to the receiver from the surface of Titan. The altitude of the probe is calculated on the basis of the reflected signal.
The equipment was also designed to provide scientific data of the Titan's surface properties on the basis of the intensity of the reflected signal. The instruments were designed, manufactured and tested in Finland by Ylinen Electronics Ltd between the years 1992-1996. The project was technically very challenging since the design was required to cope with a wide range of unknown environmental factors of Titan. Along Huygens project Elektrobit Group accumulated competence in designing high-reliability equipment and assuring the equipment reliability before the delivery and over its whole life cycle.
The technology developed for the Huygens probe is utilised e.g. in road traffic monitoring; Ylinen Electronics Ltd. has supplied radar based traffic counters for this purpose. Moreover the technology is applied in different radio sensors and telecommunication equipment.
Ylinen Electronics Ltd. participates in numerous space projects that develop for example remote sensing equipment that can be used in e.g. climate change monitoring. Ylinen Electronics Ltd is a significant member of the Finnish space community. 'Our goal is to continue developing our competence by participating in the space projects, and at the same time actively look for new markets and terrestrial applications for the space technology', says Mr. Marko Koski, managing Director of Ylinen Electronics Ltd.
